Missoni for Target

The tides of change are vastly approaching the world of fashion and nothing makes this more evident than the recent partnering of Target and Missoni. Even though I will probably buy a piece from the Missoni for Target line, if there are any left after today, it is NOT the same thing as buying a real piece of Missoni. I view it more as buying a piece of “Missoni for Target” rather than a real piece of Missoni. Donatella Versace was quoted saying that she’d never do a Target line because it would dilute the Versace name. The question I ask myself is, is that mind set realistic or idealistic of her? The cold hard truth is that the world of fashion is a business and at the end of the day it is about increasing the bottom line. I think we will start to see more collaborations and lower priced lines in the years to come. What I see happening is that designer’s will have multiple tiers in their lines, like Ralph Lauren whose brand ranges from $10 tee shirts to thousand dollar ball gowns. I think the move is bitter sweet because it will make the designer brands more accessible to the general public but shows that even our high end design houses need to adapt in this ever changing economy to remain profitable. In the words of Carrie Bradshaw, it’s the end of an era.
