How Asians Feel About Their Name Brands

Guest Writer, Peishan J.

I am Chinese myself, and it is hard to understand why my culture and other Asian cultures are materialist. I am now living in America, and I prefer to buy items that are high quality but not necessarily “designer.” From talking to my girlfriends, Chinese judge each other. There is pressure to look high in society. As such, ”There are social norms.”  This is why knock offs are so prevalent. Whenever I go back to visit China, I am asked buy my family and friends purses.  I usually say, “No.” Even though I don’t feel comfortable, I will bring back some bags if my friends and family will reimburse me and if I feel like promoting materialism.

There is a fashion trends section on huaren.com where I check out what other Chinese are interested in. This is an all things Chinese website. It makes me feel like I am back home again. Here are few favorites of mine from 你傻你就傻 - translated user name: Say you are stupid you are stupid.
